Three Frays from Mallorca…

...and Four Stories

Three frays from Mallorca is a fictional account of Father Junipero Serra, a Spanish Franciscan friar, beatified as a Saint by John Paul II in 1988, whose life’s journey took him from his island home of Mallorca to the Pacific coast at Alta California in the Las Californias Province of New Spain—now California—where he founded a chain of missions.

In this volume, Maiolo’s historical novella is accompanied by four contemporary stories of men struggling with Catholicism in their adulthood, including “The Pilgrim Virgin,” winner of a 1994 Pushcart Prize for Fiction.
