Many of the works published by Overcoat Books feature cover art by Julie Brown Maiolo, Joseph’s late wife. A native of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Julie was raised in Moorehead, Minnesota, and attended undergraduate school at Moorehead’s Concordia College, where she studied art and English and received her B.A in art. Julie attended graduate school in visual arts at University of Virginia, American University, University of Minnesota Duluth, and University of Wisconsin Superior. She began her teaching career in the South, where she was active in school integration and civil rights. She also created an art department with innovative programs for a new high school outside Washington, D.C., and was a consulting editor for an art book published by Prentice-Hall. For thirty-three years, in five states, Maiolo taught children and young adults. For 2001-2002, she received the Elementary Art Educator of the Year Award in Minnesota. Julie Maiolo was a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Sweetbriar, Virginia. Her art work has been exhibited in various venues throughout the Duluth-Superior region, including the Duluth Art Institute and Tweed Museum of Art. Her work has also been exhibited in Norway, Northern Virginia, Charlottesville, Moorhead, and the Minneapolis College of Art & Design.
